It was a true privilege to be taught by Anishinaabe Thunder Company owner Tkogiwewninì, Pinesi Doodem, Omàmiwininì-Anishinaabe (James Miller, Ruffed Grouse Clan of the Algonquin-Anishinaabe Nation) about First Nations history and the impact of colonization on Indigenous peoples. James is a cultural educator, Anishinaabe language teacher, and Firekeeper. He seeks to break cycles of intergenerational trauma within Indigenous communities, and foster reconciliation between Indigenous and Non-Indigenous peoples. Our collaboration, Bangishimo (Sunset), embodies the western direction, from the water to the sky. In Anishinaabe culture, the western direction is understood to be where Thunderbirds, sacred spiritual protectors, reside. This shirt is another step towards reconciliation; offering a window into the culture and teachings of the Anishinaabe people.
